This episode of WWE Main Event was taped ahead of Raw at the SAP Center in San Jose, California
24/7 Champion Dana Brooke defeated Tamina in a non-title match (5:00)
There was a bad finish they couldn’t really edit, so it was a match that fell a little flat.
So, although the 24/7 title wasn’t on the line here, it at least still exists. Main Event has been the surrogate home for Belt for a while now, but it looks like it was postponed for a while while Creative Guard changed.
Despite it being relatively small, we still got a reverse chinlock from Tamina on Brooke. The crowd was quite in it, however, and tried to rally Brooke.
The end that went awry came when Brooke dodged a charge in the corner to post Tamina. Brooke turned her around and the referee counted three, but called it two, probably because Tamina didn’t kick out in time. The crowd was audibly disturbed by the mistake.
The real end was when Brooke hit Tamina with a neckbreaker, but it was good to see that the commentary team didn’t ignore it and called out the bad referee. We’ll see if anything comes of it or whether they sweep it under the rug.
Alpha Academy beat Shelton Benjamin & Mustafa Ali (6:22)
It was a good, solid pre-Raw tag match – perfect to set the table for this live crowd, who were into everything.
He did two backstage segments before this. At first Ali was looking to R-Truth for advice, which contained a bit of comedy, before Gable asked Ali to ask Truth when he should have asked her. Gable tells Ali that Otis hasn’t been given food yet and that he will eat her alive.
Later, he did a piece between Ali and Benjamin where Ali wanted to talk strategy with Benjamin. He had none of it and listed his achievements before asking Ali to follow his lead. They’re actually pushing the “Gold Standard” moniker of Benjamins.
Benjamin and Gable shook hands when the bell rang. The story of the match was that Benjamin didn’t really think Ali was up to the challenge, but they did a really good job together, despite the finish.
There was some beautifully worked stuff in the beginning, especially between Gable and Ali and they worked through the commercial, culminating in some miscommunication between Benjamin and Ali.
Otis kicks Benjamin out to the outside allowing Gable to get back on Ali. The pair then hit the alpha bomb for the win.
After the match Benjamin and Ali argued before walking backwards, licking Ali’s wounds.
It’s so refreshing to get some storylines and continuity on the main event for once. It’s simple stuff at this stage, but the backstage segments where we learn a little more about the characters from the people actually performing can only be a good thing.
Tune in next week to see what’s next for Mustafa Ali, Shelton Benjamin and who knows, maybe Cedric Alexander. Oh danger!
