Web3 Games Company Midnight, led by ex-SoundCloud and Disney Executive, emerges from stealth with $7.5 million seed funding – NFTgators

Web3 game company Midnight emerged from stealth today with a $7.5 million round of funding in a seed round led by Shima Capital. Prominent blockchain gaming investors including Forte, Snackclub, Overwolf, founder of gaming company Illuvium and investor Woodstock Fund, FJ Labs, Bixin Ventures and others also participated in the round.

Founded in 2021, the company is led by CEO Steve Wade, a gaming development entrepreneur and executive publisher and video game developer. They have launched 45 online games, four gaming payment solutions and eight game portals.

Former SoundCloud CTO, Steven Spagnolo, also co-founded Midnight. He has over 30 years of experience in the games industry and has led two studios from bootstrap to exit as CEO and CTO for web, mobile, console and PC. Prior to joining SoundCloud, he was senior director of technology for mobile game company King and founder of Blue Tongue Entertainment (acquired by THQ) and free-to-play games studio Twitch (acquired by Gree).

Midnight’s C-suite also features chief creative officer Bill Roper, who was a game designer for Diablo, Warcraft, and StarCraft. Roper previously led the Marvel Games franchise and previously served as chief creative officer at Improbable.

The executive team includes acting Chief Product Officer Chris Heatherley, former Executive Vice President of Games for NBCUniversal and former General Manager of Disney Mobile Games. He has helped turn Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Jurassic World into multi-billion dollar franchises.

The company is on a mission to create games with “eternal stories” and never-ending experiences that keep players coming back. Wade told Games Beat that Midnight Web3 is making a free-to-play game with a “foraging” system that creates interoperability and a robust game economy.
