EAST BRIDGEWATER — A three-alarm fire at a home in East Bridgewater required mutual aid from six neighboring towns, forcing the home’s two residents to evacuate Monday night.

At 5:08 p.m., the city’s fire department responded to reports of a “serious residential fire” at 632 West Union St., according to East Bridgewater fire chief Timothy Harhanen.

A written statement from the fire department said firefighters encountered “heavy smoke and flames” emanating from the residence. Abington, Bridgewater, Brockton, Halifax, Hanson and West Bridgewater sent additional resources and firefighters to the scene.

According to the statement, by the time firefighters arrived, the two residents, who were the only people in the home at the time, had evacuated the building.

There were no fatalities in the fire, but there was a lot of smoke and fire damage throughout the house.

Harhagen estimated that the fire caused $500,000 in damage to the house.

“The residents were unable to return home and will be staying elsewhere,” the statement said.

The cause and cause of the fire is being investigated by the city fire department and fire department.

“Preliminary assessments indicate that the nature of the fire was not suspicious,” Herhagen said.
