Publisher CD Projekt Red has announced that one of the new Witcher projects it hinted at earlier this month is The Witcher Remake, a complete rebuild of the first installment in the RPG game series that put the Polish studio on the map. The remake, codenamed Canis Majoris, will be built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5.

“The game is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, which involves employees of the veteran Witcher series,” said CD Projekt Red. “We … provide full creative guidance.”

Based in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, Fool’s Theory has contributed to games such as Baldur’s Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin II, Outriders, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The studio is also currently collaborating with 11bit Studios on a “dark, esoteric RPG” known as Codename Vitriol.

“The Witcher is where it all started for us all, for CD Projekt Red,” said studio head Adam Badowski. “It was the first game we ever made, and it was a big moment for us at the time. Going back to this place and re-creating the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.”

There’s no release date for The Witcher Remake yet, but as CD Projekt Red puts it, it’s currently in “the early stages of development.”
