A new Red Dead Redemption 2 mod transforms Rockstar’s sandbox game by adding brutal and realistic new hunting mechanics as official RDR2 and Red Dead Online updates remain scarce and we all look ahead to GTA 6’s release date.
Hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2, especially if you’re looking for all the legendary animals, always felt a little too simple. In New Hanover, for example, you can just walk outside the camp, find a huge pack of white-tailed deer, and grab a prized meal, all in the span of about five minutes. Given RDR2’s attention to detail elsewhere, the hunting system has always felt it needs more substance.
Hunting Grounds, a new mod from Shtivi, transforms Red Dead Redemption 2 hunts by making them more difficult, complex and brutal. First, it adds realism by giving animals of the same species different weights and sizes – instead of identical herds of deer and buffalo, all based on the same character model, Hunting Grounds has you targeting the most important specimens, with the added bonus of having animal packs there. no longer look so tacky.
When you think you’ve found your target, you can observe it and Hunting Grounds will display a new UI element that tells you their weight. Large animals provide better meat and pelts, while smaller animals may be easier to kill but less rewarding. There is also an entirely new system associated with animal populations. If you hunt one species for too long in one area, the population will decrease and you will have to leave it there for a while to allow the animal presence to recover. The UI has also been updated to show you how common animals are in each location.
When you shoot and injure an animal, you no longer have to use the eagle eye mode to track them down – instead they leave a trail of blood, which you can follow with your natural cunning to complete your kill. It makes hunting so much bloodier and real because you rely on your senses instead of an overlay to collect your money.
Rather, Hunting Grounds also offers a new map marker to show where you bet your animal bait, which is otherwise easy to lose in the RDR2 base game. However, this option can be turned off if you want the rawest experience. You can now download Hunting Grounds from Nexus Mods.
