Paris, France , November 252022 Nexans, a global organization and key driver of the world’s transition to a more connected and sustainable future, has awarded the contracts for the Celtic Interconnector, jointly developed by Irish and French transmission system operators (EirGrid and RTE – Réseau de Transport d’) , brought in. Electricity). This 700 MW project will be the world’s longest XLPE interconnector and the first submarine link for direct power exchange between France and Ireland.
The Celtic Interconnector has been recognized by the European Union as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). It will enable the exchange of electricity between Ireland and France, supply electricity to around 450,000 households and is vital to the development of an integrated energy system in Europe. Such a system would accelerate the European energy transition by promoting the development of renewable energy sources. The project will help the EU achieve its energy policy and climate goals of affordable, safe and sustainable energy for all.
The interconnection between France and Ireland will use HVDC 320 kV technology. This includes a 500 km submarine cable route, a 40 km underground route in France (Brittany), a 35 km underground route in Ireland (Cork County). A 10 km 400 kV HVAC connection to the Irish grid is also part of the project awarded to Nexans.
The cables will be manufactured in Nexon’s state-of-the-art facilities. 1,000 km of submarine cables will be laid in Halden (Norway) and 180 km of underground cables in Charleroi (Belgium). The accessories will be manufactured in Courtailaud (Switzerland). The newly built Nexans Aurora cable-laying vessel and proven project delivery model with major subcontractors will ensure the highest installation and safety standards. The project consists of laying an innovative bundle of two HVDC power cables and a duplicated fiber optic system with full data capacity.
