Malakai Black isn’t the only person WWE recently approached AEW for his release.
After All Out earlier this month, reports emerged that Black had received a conditional release from the company. On Friday, our own Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Black wasn’t the only person asking AEW for his release this time around.
Meltzer wrote, “What we do know is that Black was one of the first people WWE approached even though he had a five-year deal with AEW.”
“When Paul Levesque took over from Vince McMahon, WWE contacted several former WWE talents working there who had either left themselves or were fired by Vince McMahon. Black at the time to ask for his release. Wasn’t the only person.
Other wrestlers contacted informed AEW management that they had been contacted by a member of WWE Talent Relations. This led to AEW legal chief Megha Parekh writing a letter to WWE threatening to interfere with the contract. Tony Khan announced the news to the AEW roster at a talent meeting last month.
Black’s release from AEW is believed to include a non-compete period that allows him to work on the show but not for WWE.
