Kota Ibushi has not appeared in a match since being defeated by Kazuchika Okada in the G1 Climax 31 final of New Japan Pro Wrestling in October 2021, reportedly due to a shoulder injury. as per latest Wrestling Observer NewsletterIbushi’s shoulder is recovering, but the process is progressing slowly, and no clear timeline was given as to when he is expected to return.

Ibushi injured himself during an encounter with Okada when he hit a phoenix splash, awkwardly landing on his shoulder, and since that time he has been working on its rehabilitation. One reason it took longer and was more difficult for him to recover is because Ibushi reportedly refused to have surgery in the area, even though he had been advised to do so.

Since that time, Ibushi’s relationship with NJPW has soured after the company was criticized on social media, although NJPW publicly apologized to Ibushi. The former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion shared messages from high-ranking Yusuke Kikuchi with New Japan at the time, threatening to terminate his contract. Since then, it was reported that he is not expected to be back with the company in the future.

While Ibushi hasn’t been involved in the wrestling business for some time now, he was spotted this week in Japan with AEW’s Kenny Omega. A backstage brawl after a recent All Out pay-per-view saw the former Golden Lover hang out while Omega was suspended from AEW.
